The Pirates of Portabello

Sat 2nd June 2011

Last weeks some friend of from Koo's Boomsma's groups came with us on a half day to Galeta as they wanted to explore the Caribbean coast of Panama a bit.

Lawrence and I working hard censusing nests
After showing them the fun times of team wasp we went for an explore along the coast of Colon province to Portabello.

Sabastian and Juainto look like they are loving wasp work!

This now small fishing villages was named by Christopher Columbus who called it the Puerto Bello which means beautiful port. Although now a sleepy little village it was once one of the greatest ports in Panama with a large spanish fortress to protect the vast treasures that would pass through its gateways and attacks from pirates!

Hard to imagine this now though!

The San Jeronimo fort now only consists of ruins with old cannons still pointing out to the sea as much of it was dismantled and used in the construction of the canal and locks further down the coast.

Everyone appreciated the afternoon off and had we enjoyed watching thus sun go down from this remote spot.

Robin looking pensive
Lawrence doing what only a Lawrence can with a  double thumbs up
Sol loving not seeing wasps for an afternoon
Me also enjoying not seeing wasps for the afternoon

On our way back to panama we just had to stop and enjoy the beautiful sunset and the full moon lighting up the Caribbean.
